(Post 111) First of 2012; An Update

Well it feels like it's been a year since I've updated here! (Yes, the last post was in 2011, this one is in 2012. And no, the jokes won't be getting any better. Promise)

Life has been busy, but satisfying. Working at Sculpin QA is proving to still be fun, though with testing games, there's not a lot to complain about. I've also been doing a dash of Customer Email Support on the side, there, which is different. It can be nice to help people out.

One side effect I've noticed about being a game tester, it has seriously cut down the amount of time I play games in my spare time, I haven't turned my Xbox on in weeks. Or touched my guitar. Or drawn!

One thing I have been doing a lot of, though, is working on customizing action figures. I'm working on a pair of Colonial Marines from the Aliens movie franchise.

For Christmas I received a nice Wacom drawing tablet from my older brother, I intend to put this to good use as I work on developing a little idea for a kids book I came up with a couple months ago. I've got a rough draft hashed out, and will be working with a friend of mine on illustrating it once things get more finalized.

I'm trying to get myself drawing more. While waiting for tasks, or during breaks at work, I'll crank out a little doodle.
At least it's something.

A guy I work with (a project lead actually) who has a band said he checked out my site and was impressed with my work, and may see about getting me to do an album cover for him, which is pretty alright with me.

(110) Game Tester A-Go-Go

Well it's been about a month, I'm pretty settled into my new digs in PEI, as well as the new game testing job at Sculpin QA.
It's fun 'work' (some would doubt playing games all day counts as work, but it can take a lot out of you), and there's also a lot of great people there, which is pretty wicked.

Here's some proof that I haven't forgotten how to draw.

I picked up a groovy calligraphy pen at a craft store a week or two ago, and have been having a lot of fun with it in between logging bugs at work.

Anyway this is just a quick update to let you know I'm still alive.

I tried for a bit more action shots this time. I'll eventually (probably) do a combat scene as well.
I just got to the stream, got the first setup ready, and I found that the batteries in my camera were dead.

After trudging back home, getting new AAs, and getting back to the spot; I was ready to roll.

I spent a couple hours in the woods. Either I need stronger bug spray, or they're getting used to it..

Still searching for work rather relentlessly, and fruitlessly.
In the mean time I've been keeping busy with more pictures outside.
It helps ease the stress (the twitch in my eye has subsided nicely)

Also, I've seen Captain America. I thought it was pretty good for a comic book movie.
Suckerpunch was pretty great, too. Had a cool style to it, similar to that which I envision for my Jetpack Jack pitch...

(101) Rough Jig Animation

Our animation instructor decided to spring a full blown music video on our class for the last term.
At this point, with around two weeks of classes left, it's looking like it's been turned into a "Run-away project".

The revisions are endless, there are no model sheets, and the only one with an idea of what's going to happen in the story is the instructor.
I could go on.

I was originally doing storyboards for a brief scene wherein the main character, a mischievous leprechaun, is doing a little jig, similar to Bugs Bunny in Hillbilly Hare.

Then I had to create a background for the scene, and then was told to go ahead an animate it.

An animator isn't -exactly- what I wish to be. It's low on the list. Give me a character to design or a script to write any day.

Anyway this is the 5th or 6th version of this little jig. A 7 frame loop.

So, set the video to loop, or click play a whole bunch, and let the little guy jig to his heart's content.

So, there's a rough layout, and a character design. We're doing a montage in Flash. I'm using it as a chance to flush out my Jetpack Jack character a bit, and do some actual animation with him. Should be fun.

I have a little script done up, and some rough storyboards, which will be treated to a little graphite, then be turned into an animatic, and -then- comes the flashin'.

We had to do a portrait in Life Drawing. I chose a picture of Jim Carrey. He had a good expression, and I thought that his open jaw would be a nice challenge.

Might be one of my best portrait drawings so far. I'm improving.

Also, here's a link to a script I did up for our montage project. I opted to use my Jet Pack Jack character. It'll later be animated in Flash, and it'll be a good chance to hash out some character details.

81 - Knight and Chicken Monster

Thought I'd share some concept character sketches I did up for class. Our theme is Knights of The Round Table (quite similar to our Renaissance theme, I've noticed).

We have to design a Knight, and also a monster for him to fight. We also need to do a Pitch 'n Swing Animation.
If allowed, I'll have the knight hopping off of a moving draw-bridge, startling an egg out of the monstrous chicken, and hitting the egg with the sword.

We're also permitted to create a 3rd Incidental character, whom I'm thinking of making a narrator, and having the whole thing be themed around a medieval commercial for a sword company.
I think I'll have fun with the script writing aspect.

I did this little doodle up during a break in Life Drawing. Also, I've made major changes to the Knight character, and added a Squire character as well.

And another Update. I've basically had to revise everything. Script has been re-written, characters re-designed, and everything re-boarded.

So, here's my castle Location Design. But. We aren't using the locations we designed for our own scripts. Instead we voted on 5 others that classmates did, and are changing those to fit our scripts.

(80) The Rocketeer in watercolour

I broke out some canvas and splashed some watercolour around the other day.

It's not done yet, I've still got quite a ways to go, but so far, I'm liking my progress.

Also, considering changing the name of my Rocket Boy idea to Jetpack Jack. It's percolating in my mind as I think up ideas for another script on the subject.

(79) Rocket Boy Update

Here's a second version of my Rocketboy idea. I spent a bit more time on this, this time.
The first Rocketboy script I wrote is here.

I've enlisted the help of a character designer, Chris Boyd ( [link] ) who was very interested and very helpful.

He seems quite enthusiastic about my little project, and was generous enough to whip up a concept for his take on Rocketboy.

At the Jalloo ( http://jalloo.net/ ) animation festival, here in Miramichi, last week, we had a nice woman come in to talk to us from Teletoon.

She discussed their pitching guidelines and criteria, and I'm seriously considering submitting a Rocketboy pitch.
The odds of it getting picked aren't super, but, it's worth a shot.

We'll see how it goes.

A little side project for one of our classes was to create a little character to go with this expression sheet.

I should've had a character in mind, or at least thought of a definitive look, but I ended up doing a...garbled..version of myself.
Did them up rather quickly with a blue pencil, then worked 'em over with a black pen to make 'em pop.

Here's a layout set in an idol room in ancient Japan.

This is a voice-over project I helped some friends out with. I wrote the script, play the voice of the announcer, and also made the music.
My friend Brad Lamey did the Shaun of The Dead drawing, and also contributed his voice, as did my other pal, John Landry.

In staging class we had to do a location design for a room, wherein there's an Idol, a door, and a window, set in old timey Japan.
The two characters who would be involved in the animation for this are a Ninja and a Samurai.
Here's an early view of the door.

Once I get revisions and such, I'll probably upload another version.
I just did a quick colour-up in Photoshop.

(72) Sculpture

For a Friday afternoon workshop, our teacher Tara offered a sculpture class.
I jumped on the oppurtunity and made a little sculpture based off of this sketch I did up before.

This sculpture I wanted to do right, so I screwed down wire to a wooden base, used twine to bulk it up a bit, then I covered the twine in masking tape (to A- help the fibres from the twine to be easily controlled, and B- to hold its shape easier) This also made the clay easier to work with once it was applied to the armature.

I baked it for three 5 minute intervals (the clay isn't on very thick), and then I primed it with a couple coats of white, and applied some acrylic to it.

I used a black pen to put on the eyes. And I'm probably going to do another coat on the wonky looking hands.

Also, I'm starting a little (18" by 12") painting of The Goon, using oils (for the first time) and acrylics.
This is a very very rough, early state.

I still have quite a ways to go.

(69 [heh] ) Jungle Layout: Painted

Well, here we have a painted version of my jungle layout.
It was done up on two pages of water colour paper, the main background on one sheet, and the overlay (the leaf layer) on another.

This was then cut out and affixed to several sheets of clear acetate, cel-fashion. This allows for the overlay to be lifted, so the background can be viewed in all of its splendor underneath.

Well, it would, only I taped the sucker down, because I was tired of it flapping all about.

The scanners at the college are still terrible, as you can see from all the streaks and lines.

I only tampered slightly with the levels and the contrast in Photoshop, to try to minimize the streakiness.

There are plans to shoot the script I did up earlier, Ani-Fu, this weekend.
We may even have two cameras.

Talk about a snazzy operation.

I've only made minor changes to the script, and am thinking of adding in a bit of fireball-shooting, just so my friend Brad can play with Adobe After Effects (which is a lot of fun, and easy tp use, once you get used to it)

College is going well. Doing lotsa painting of backgrounds, as well as drawing.

Currently I've started sculpting a jetpack for my Rocketboy Character. Just for fun. It turned out alright, nothing extravagant. I'm currently painting, and trying to figure out how to make a harness or something for it...

Anyway, that's just a little update.

Sure, it might not be that evil, but hey. It'll be fun, nonetheless.

(66) Rocketboy character mock-up idea

To try and get a better handle on the design of my Rocketboy character, I kitted up one of my toys and took some pictures. I'm debating making a jetpack out of clay, baking it, then making a mould and all that fun stuff.

Anyway, I told a friend I'd upload some pictures once I got it pretty much figured out, and here we are.

(60) Graveyard Layout

Wow I've got 60 posts on here.

I'm re-taking layout this term, this is the first layout I've done, the subject being that of a Graveyard in the 1700s.
This is the uncoloured version. I'm going to add in some more texture, and do some tonals, and then we'll be painting it in our BG Painting class.

It's a lot bigger than this, but I re-sized it on the computer. So if you click it, it gets bigger.

These are the characters I made up for my Graveyard layout. The plan is, the grave robber gets spooked by the ghost.

Simple, no?
Just for an animation exercise. I made a character similar to the grave robber this last year, but this version is much better.

Here we have an updated and revised version of the layout, made prettier.

(57th) The Fantastical Adventures of Rocket Boy

This is a little idea for a cartoon/comic that came to me today.

The Fantastical Adventures of Rocket Boy.

A Steam-punk themed cartoon set in the stylized world of the future, as seen from the 1950's perspective, yet with a twist.

You'd get your flying cars, zeppelins, robots, crazy inventions, ray guns, and maniacal villains.

I see it as a mix between The Rocketeer, Arcanum (an old PC RPG) Sky Captain, Astro Boy, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and The Goon.

I still haven't thought of the style yet. I'm toying with the idea of going along the lines of the Fallout mascot, modified, of course. That, or something completely different. I'm still doing lots of thinking about this.

The premise (of the first season, at least) would be that Rocket Boy's father has been kidnapped by a rival Robotics Inventor, and Rocket Boy, armed with his father's prize invention, a robotic jetpack, must find a way to save him.

In each episode, Rocket Boy finds a leaked radio message from his father, with clues to his whereabouts.

I see it being mostly for teens to adults, with some spicily awesome writing and groovy characters.

Well, I just needed to get all of that out of my system in case I forgot it. Would be nice to have a Steam Punk styled show.

I think it could have some potential.

56th Post - Finished Clay

Now that my little clay man is all baked up, I decided to slap on some acrylic paint, and snap a few pictures to show off.

I made the glasses just by twisting and curling some wire, then jabbed it into his head.

If I make more of these little guys, I'll have to work on a way to get the classes in and out without damage to the head, which I've been dealing with. The sides are quite weak and crumbly, but with a little glue, it'll hold.

Let's hope my brother likes it.

55th Post - Playing with Clay

Recently, since my courses are done for the holiday (for the most part) I've found myself with a lot of spare time, and clay, on my hands.

Making things out of clay (characters, maquettes, and the like) is something I've always had an interest in.
I picked up a brick of gray clay, and a box of sculpey from the college supply store ages ago, and only now thought to mix the two together.

The gray brick had the consistency of...well, a brick. It took around 15 minutes just to get the clay kneadable, and it was hell on the hands.

The sculpey was flesh-toned, and I found to be too oily, or at least, to have too much moisture.

I'm sure there are occasions when this would be preferable, because it made using it very easy, but I just found it to be too soft.

Therefore, I, being the creative genius that I am, decided to mix the two materials together!

Elementary, my dear Watson.

I'm sure a much smarter person would've done this long ago, but we won't get into that today.

And why did Sherlock call Watson "my dear"?

Anyway, back to the experiment.

I'm still working on ways to get the clay just right, and to get a proper maquette that will survive the baking process. I've some...crumbly disasters.

I'm semi-planning on making a little clay figure, and painting it up, for my elder brother (in the beer bottle) for Christmas.

If it doesn't work out, it's not the end of the world.

Anyway, just a little update. Doing lots of sketching and doodling, working with the idea of a Conan-esque character. Perhaps sometime I'll upload some scans of those.

Here we have an updated version of my two previous characters from storyboarding, the surfer and the ice cream man. These were whipped up from a base sketch, then put into Photoshop and Illustrator for a quick trace-over and colour job.

He came to me for my lovely voice ( I've been doing a lot of voices for people, lately), and I pitched him a European/German one that he liked and we went with.

In this little post, I did some digging around to last year. We had an Art History assignment, wherein we made a mock T.V. pitch for a program, based around a certain period of Art History. Our group got Greece, so, we created this, called Greecey Mysteries.

Even after this was finished, there were parts that made us wince.
So much would we change.
So much would we do better.

Even though it makes me die inside a little bit, each time, I'm posting it here. Compare this to Jesus Christ - Zombie Killer, and please, please notice the drastic improvement.
Though, considering that in Greecey Mysteries, we didn't even have a script, I think it was okay for our first video project. Ever.

Finally!
My Zombie movie is available for viewing!

It was a large project, our final Acting one, wherein we needed at least 5 minutes of unedited footage.

This was written and directed by myself, and the other stars are listed in the credits.
It was a lot of fun, also a lot of work, but the fun makes it all worth while. Also, please forgive the poor audio quality of the beginning and ending pieces, we were working in a small, echoey blue room, and didn't have the time to clean up the audio,

Here are some pages from the class trip we had last week, to the Moncton Zoo.

We started off with Otters, then moved on to everything else. It was fun, though strong, cold winds made for a difficult time, I almost got a couple pages torn off from the wind!

In picking favourites, it's a toss up between the Otters and the Gibbons, hearing the Gibbons hoot like they do, oh it was hilarious.

We had a horse drawing session on Thursday, with the Year 2 Animation students, and the Media Studies students.
It was a lot of fun, and I got some good sketching done, the only part that wasn't so great was when the black flies came out, and they came out hungry.

For another Drawing Jam, we have to draw ourselves as a guest star in a favourite cartoon, or the like. I decided to put myself into the style of The Misfits album cover, from Project 1950.

I also decided to cash in on the latest "Travis-themed" craze, being that of Magical Travis.

These are two characters I did up for a Chase animation. We have to do the characters in a Looney Tunes style, with a Jonny Quest style background.

I based my characters off of Asterix and Obelix characters, and I like how they turned out.

I then turned it into Resevoir Dogs style, basically by giving her a suit and tie, with black shades.

Another Christmas, another bunch of presents.

I didn't get as much done this Christmas as I'd intended to. I took a couple of days off for a break from school, and then, playing football with my two brothers, I ended up spraining both of my middle fingers.

Due to that, I'm reduced to typing with thumbs and pinkies, and it's cut down on my drawing and guitar playing in a big way.
Definately throws a monkey-wrench into the works.

But, to quote the old Bulldog of Winston Churchill "Never give up. Never, never give up!. We shall go on to the end."

I've been on a little coloring spree.

I re-did my Scotsman in Illustrator, and it looks alright to me.

I'm also putting up a character I designed for a story-boarding assignment, where we have to storyboard an original story idea, and we're doing Zombies That Go Quack! (written by yours truly), based on the Archie comic style. This is a rather big assignment, which ties in with two other classes (Acting, and Script writing)

I finally got around to re-doing some older Drawing Jams, like the Marilyn Monroe and the Bruce Lee subjects.

We've now got to do Jim Carrey, in Beetlejuice style, and I think that that one should be fun.

Anyway, here's my Bruce Lee.

I re-redid my Bruce Lee, again. I coloured him in Adobe Illustrator.

And my Monroe, which I turned into a guy with rocket shoes, because we all would if we could.

And I also re-vamped my Unknown Soldier piece, and threw in a gradient BG.

I've been reading a lot of my old comics, and one of those comics just happens to be The Unknown Soldier.

The graphic novel is full of fantastic artwork, and I chose to replicate one.

I'd had this done in my sketchbook since the summer, but I decided to re-do it with my calligraphy pen, on better paper.

Not bad for my 2nd try with the calligraphy pen, if I do say so myself.

Which I do.

Done with ink, and filled in with graphite. Not much can beat a good #2 pencil.

Here is another drawing jam. We had to do Sarah Silverman.

Not exactly a subject I would've chosen willingly, so I chose to turn her into a man, and then I turned that man into a zombie.

I did this with a calligraphy pen, and for my first time using it, I think it went fairly well.

I should be doing more calligraphic stuff, which I'll be sure to put up, also.
